Cresswell-Ogbonna-Reid-Tomkins - PL4-W3-D1-GD-7:0
We've looked rock solid when we have utilised our 3 CBs in a back four and we have also looked pretty dangerous at attacking set pieces. Jenkinson has done a fine job for us but Tomkins is a much stronger defender and this back four allows Cresswell to literally pour forward knowing the back four becomes a formidable back three.

Considering our excellent performances with this back four this season do you think Slaven will continue with it for Stoke?....

I hope so.

Not a hope in hell of starting against Stoke, there are 5 days for at least one of 'em to get injured....

Hope so too, but Cresswell/left DMF are gonna have to be at it: Shaquiri looked a right handful against City.

It might be that the effectiveness of our attacking fullbacks took everyone by surprise last season, but now they're prepared for it and know how to exploit the defensive frailty of having two attacking fullbacks.

If we play Cresswell, we might always have to play a more solid defender on the other side, whether it be Tomkins or another rightback.

When was that then?

also for all but one of those games we've played 3 central midfielders and 2 attacking rather than the other way round

Very good performance, didn't even notice Tomkins for most of the game.

Much better than heart in mouth whenever Jenk0 touches the ball.

Tomkins isn't a right back and that is evident with his positioning when he plays there. Easily beaten for pace and allows too many crosses. Quote your stats as much as you like but it's only a matter of time until this weakness is exploited by every team we play if he is a regular starter there.

If you aren't going to play Jenkinson then we need to buy somebody decent in January which means shipping someone you do probably like out to free up money/wages.

We've got a good squad but we are a mid-table side. I really think some people think we have a team of world beaters. Well we don't. Most can't get in their national sides.

I would like us to try Ogbonna, Reid and Tomkins as a back three with Cresswell and Jenkinson or Antonio as advanced wing-backs.

Not sure about running Tomkins down as a right back, he doesn't often get done but all full backs get beaten occasionally.

It's just as important how the back four operate together, plus Tomkins is deec at headering

Not a bad shout.

I think Ogbonna has been fucking superb since he came back. So composed. Reid was a rock against Mancs.

Tomkins has been decent enough at RB but he offers little in going forward but very good defensively, so, do you leave him out and play Jenko? Do you play Tomka at RB? Or as you say play the three CB's?

Choices, choices.

I see a lot of things in football as a a game of partnerships. How a centre back pairing work together, how central midfield works, how a full back links with the winger in front etc

It's not always about your best players, it's about the ones who work best together. For me, Reid and oggy look very good together and should stay. Tomkins hadn't jet us down at all at right back, and our attacks down the right haven't been stunted so should stay there too.

With injuries etc I think Bilic must be going mad trying to figure out our best midfield 2 or 3. He hasn't had noble, obiang, song, kouyate, payet and lanzini all fit at the same time to work out the best combinations.

Interesting to see what he does at the weekend

Re: Cresswell-Ogbonna-Reid-Tomkins - PL4-W3-D1-GD-7:0
I agree we shoudl stick with Tomkins (in the immediate future. But the point abouthim not being a natural RB is valid. Fortunately he has a bit of pace and if beaten has those long legs to scoop the ball away which he does very well. I expect we will be looking for a right back in the Summer. At the moment though, his more defensive instincts and positioning give us a more compact and solid defence.

Noble looked a lot better alongside 2 other midfielders in SOng and Kouyate. Allows him to get forward more too. And we still ahve Obiang to come in. Midfield lacking the creative influences of Payet, Lanzini and Moses respectively. Will eb interesting to see if Lanzini comes back in and who he replaces? I suspect Antonio with Lanzini perhaps in a wider role?

Re: Cresswell-Ogbonna-Reid-Tomkins - PL4-W3-D1-GD-7:0
agreed alf

noble can create people forget that about his game, think he put moses through sat?

I'm relaxed about Tonks playing right back...west brom have played 4 centre halfs all season and they don't seem to have a problem with it

I'm not sure if it is the back four that is the reason or the shirts they wear.

Light Blue away kit is unbeaten this season.

Yeah thats true Franks, I forgot about WBA. Freeing up Noble from the deep lying role will make him more effective or at least sharing teh responsibilty with Song will help. Song supposedly made the most interceptions on Sat for teh mins he was on the pitch. He was not match fit. Hope he can stay fit now.

Re: Cresswell-Ogbonna-Reid-Tomkins - PL4-W3-D1-GD-7:0
YEAH SONG is great, imagaine if we get that form from the start of last season... he did very well sat considering how long hes been out

I'd like to see a bit more from king kayoute, he's been a little quieter lately
